Matthew Butler is an award-winning Visual Effects Supervisor who has brought his technical and artistic expertise to sixteen feature films. Most recently, he supervised visual effects on “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Matthew started his fifteen-year tenure at Digital Domain when he joined as an Image Data Supervisor on “Apollo 13” and moved up the ranks to Digital Artist for “T2 3-D: Battle Across Time,” on which he designed custom animation tools that incorporated natural physical dynamics. In the same role on “Dante’s Peak,” he developed a lava generation tool that created surface deformation, color mapping, motion emulation and velocity profiling. Matthew then worked on “Titanic,” held the role of CG Supervisor on “Fight Club,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and “Vanilla Sky,” and served as Associate Visual Effects Supervisor on “xXx.” As Visual Effects Supervisor on Roland Emmerich’s “The Day After Tomorrow,” Matthew was tasked with creating photorealistic weather, tidal waves and twisters. His work on that film earned him a VES Award for Best Single Visual Effect of the Year. As Visual Effects Supervisor on Clint Eastwood’s epics “Flags of Our Fathers” and “Letters from Iwo Jima,” Matthew oversaw the creation of CG battleships, aircraft, ocean water and troops – work that earned him a second VES Award.
